Barefoot shoes and sports: Can children be active barefoot?

1. Being active barefoot – is that even possible?

Barefoot running is no longer just about relaxing in the garden. More and more children are discovering the freedom of being active barefoot or wearing barefoot shoes during sports. Whether it's gymnastics, running, or running – many types of movement can be performed safely and effectively barefoot, as long as the surface is suitable.

2. Which sports are suitable for barefoot shoes?

Not every sport is barefoot-friendly, but many are. Particularly suitable are:

  • Gymnastics and gymnastics

  • Athletics on grass or tartan tracks

  • Yoga for children

  • Balancing exercises and outdoor games

  • Dancing or rhythmic movements

These activities promote mobility, balance and muscle strength – perfect for natural foot development.

3. What parents should pay attention to

To ensure the sports experience remains safe, parents should note the following:

  • The ground must be free of sharp stones or other hazards.

  • The barefoot shoes should be flexible, non-slip and well ventilated.

  • Children should be introduced to the movements slowly without cushioning.

  • For group activities (e.g. school sports), speak to teachers or coaches in advance.

4. The advantages: Naturally strong in motion

Barefoot sports not only strengthen foot muscles, but also improve posture, coordination, and sensory perception. Children learn to perform movements more consciously and develop better balance. Barefoot activity also promotes blood circulation – a real boost for young athletes!
